Frankie

Talk about an opportunity to use my recent posts in an example…..meet Frankie!

IMG_4226 Frankie is a cute, young – 3-month-old, puppy who came from a home with her sister. Neither have had many good interactions with people – as evidenced from their complete fear when we’re around. But it also appears that they haven’t had a lot of good experiences with dogs either.

We tested both girls with different dogs at the humane society (hoping we could pair them up with more balanced dogs) but Frankie was very dog reactive which is why it was decided she should come to pranaDOGS for a little bit to get better acquainted with both people and dogs.

This is her journey…

Day 1 – arrived at house Friday evening, set up in dining room kennel where she could watch happenings but not be involved. Barely moved most of the evening. Brought outside twice but refused to move at all. Brought into my lap for 2 hours over night and she fell asleep with other dogs around. Woke me up crying multiple times. No negative dog or people interactions.

Day 2 – 1st full day; I was gone a bit of it and she stayed in crate. By 5pm she still hadn’t pooped but her tail wagged for a second when I gave her dinner. She’s still actively pulling away from me and I have to carry her everywhere. Definitely watching what’s happening at house and happily eating raw bones. Woke me up 3x crying at night (think she’s lonely). No negative dog or people interactions.

FrankieaDay 3 – Sunday – a day at the house with her! First thing I discovered is that she had (finally) gone to the bathroom the bad news was that she was laying on it. (not a good sign). I carried her out to the living room and she found a tight spot to tuck herself into for about 15 minutes before heading straight back to the kennel. Sunday actually turned out to be a great day for her. She started exploring more and more of the house (though the stairs intimidate the heck out of her!) and has actively chosen to go to the bathroom outside (on a blanket but still). She’s very food motivated so I’ve been approaching 80% of the way then having her walk toward me the other 20% for treats and tasty morsels. Definitely keeping her distance from me but seems to be less and less around dogs. No negative dog or people interactions.

more to come…
